This week we had the pleasure of speaking with Lanski of DAppNode about infrastructure for the decentralized world and how DAppNode is using PAN to reward their community members.
What is DAppNode?
DAppNode is a personal gateway to web3. It is an operating system that allows you to host decentralized apps in a truly decentralized way and eliminates the reliance on third parties vulnerable to centralization. In our interview this week, Lanski explained that most people are interacting with blockchain the same way that they are interacting with web2 – they connect to and surrender their data to a server. One of the intentions behind DAppNode was to provide a way for individuals to own their data and actually use decentralized networks by running their own nodes without technical difficulty. Since the end of 2017, DAppNode has created free open-source software as well as a “plug and play” hardware option you can purchase on their website. Since the launch of Ethereum 2, their product has become increasingly popular because of its built-in Eth2 validator.
How is DAppNode Using PAN?
Since DAppNode’s jump in popularity, Lanski explained how their user community has both grown and changed, giving rise to a slew of new technical support questions from their consumers. This created a dilemma—the number of people seeking technical support far surpassed the capacity of DAppNode creators, and the international diversity of users created a real time zone headache. Fortunately, DAppNode had an existing community of users who were passionate about the software and became active on their Discord page to help others troubleshoot—a process Lanski described as, “the most beneficial thing that could have happened.” Without any motive other than to assist others, these active users became an invaluable part of DAppNode. “People test the software, report bugs, create issues, provide support… and all of this makes DAppNode better,” Lanski wrote in a blog post about the community. Seeking a way to extend kindness to those who had altruistically furthered the project, DAppNode launched The Community Treasury--offering PAN to individuals who were particularly active on the DAppNode Discord channel. This process has become a virtuous cycle as individuals get PAN and either cash out or donate PAN back, which is matched by Panvala’s fund and replenishes the community treasury.

Not only is DAppNode doing incredible work in the Ethereum community, they also set a creative example for how to use PAN in a generative way. “We want to create a world that is more equitable, more decentralized, where power is more evenly distributed, and people have a say in what happens with their data and finances—and we want people to be a part of this process.” Lanski encouraged folx to drop by the DAppNode community on Discord, visit their website, and to read more about how they use PAN in their Community Treasury here!
