This week we spoke with Corey Petty, Host of “Hashing it Out,” a podcast that explores blockchain infrastructure and decentralized networks with tech innovators to learn more about what they build and the problems they are attempting to solve.
Hashing it Out
Corey Petty first heard about Bitcoin through a TED Talk while he was getting his PHD in computational physics. Intrigued by the idea, he got into mining and started having conversations with his friends about blockchain technology. In June of 2015, he moved to Brazil for a work opportunity; wanting to keep up these intriguing conversations and stay up to date about was going on in the crypto world while he was gone, he and his friends started the Bitcoin Podcast. Corey went on to work in data science and blockchain security before becoming the Chief Security Officer for Status—all the while continuing to create content for the podcast.
When speaking to his role in the Bitcoin Podcast, Corey described himself as “the nerdy one in the group that explains things.” Wanting the interviews to be more “in the weeds” and technical, he and his friend Colin branched off and created a new show called Hashing it Out—a technical overview and deep dive into the impact of decentralized technology. The show looks at how web3 actually works—when Corey conducts interviews, he is looking to figure out how a project functions, what problem it intends to solve, how it scales, and what impact it might have on the overall ecosystem. He also publishes episodes that take a more personal view, looking at human motivation behind projects and trying to understand why people get involved in this space.
Tune In
Hashing it Out just published its 105th episode and has hosted a number of notable guests including Vitalik Buterin, the creators of Avalanche, Dan Boneh, and our very own Niran of Panvala! (Click here to watch) Corey enjoys bringing people onto the show who can speak to whatever the “tech du jour” is at the moment. His goal is to get to the bottom of these new projects, poking holes in the “this is the next big thing that will fix everything” narrative to figure out what a project actually does and how it will fit in with other work happening in the space.
You can go listen to the Hashing it Out podcast at Hashingitout.stream, check out their Twitter, or search for episodes on thebitcoinpodcast.com. Corey says, “listen to the show, engage with it, and tell us what you think!” You can offer feedback, suggestions, and encouragement on Slack.
Many thanks to Corey for the interview—we are so thrilled that Hashing it Out is part of the Panvala League community!
