This week we spoke with Griff Green of Commons Stack about public goods, Conviction Voting, and how Commons Stack is using PAN to fund grants chosen by their community.
What is Commons Stack?
Commons Stack grew out of Giveth and is focused on building commons-based microeconomies to sustain public goods through incentive alignment, continuous funding, and community governance. “Our goal is to reward good people for creating value for society,” Griff explained. “If you want to create value for society that is nonexcludable, you usually have to sacrifice something.” This is not Commons Stack’s approach. Rather, Griff wants to see grassroots supported public goods where anyone is able to bring value to what they care about by creating a microeconomy for it. “We want to be a cultural and technical toolset for people to create Commons.” You can read more about Commons Stack’s mission and approach here, and watch Griff speak more to the value of public goods here.
Panvala & The Commons Stack Community Fund
One of the amazing aspects of Commons Stack is that all of the PAN they raise in their Community Fund goes to external grants, which are decided via Conviction Voting. Here’s how it works:
Within Commons Stack exists a community called the “Trusted Seed.” These are individuals who have been manually verified to ensure that their values align with the existing community (folks who also want to reward good people for doing good work). Members of this Trusted Seed earn a CSTK Score for praise-worthy acts within the community, which provide them with weighted voting power. Each Panvala grant round, Trusted Seed members are able to nominate grants and vote to select the top 15 that will receive funding of at least $1000. Fun fact: The Commons Stack Community Fund Grant has distributed over 1 million $PAN worth over $75,000 USD to the Trusted Seed’s favorite grants and has been the #1 recipient of funds from the Panvala League every round since its inception!
