1Hive: Building for a More Free, Fair, Open, and Humane Future
Panvala Observer Weekly Newsletter
This week we spoke with Paul Glavin of 1Hive, a community that builds and experiments with decentralized applications and protocols—and our newest member of the Panvala League Community!
What is 1Hive?
Paul Glavin is passionate about using crypto for public goods. “To me that’s the obvious long term use case of crypto that is the most world changing.” In April of 2021 he was connected with 1Hive, a community using a novel governance structure for DAOs that utilizes conviction voting to allow its members to split up their support among different projects based on what they want to prioritize in the community. A list of these projects and proposals can be found in 1Hive’s HoneyPot, which very transparently displays available funds and how to receive said funding. 1Hive is also secured with an on chain social contract that binds everyone to a mutual agreement about the purpose of the community, as well as a decentralized arbitration protocol called, “Celeste,” which acts a fail-safe in case a proposal gets passed that does not meet this on-chain covenant. In this case, the proposal can get raised to Celeste, disputed, and the funds can be returned to the common pool. Paul recalled reading through the 1Hive website for the first time, noting, “It just kind of clicked for me that this was really powerful. I was pretty much instantly a 1Hive convert at that point.”
Building on xDai and Beyond
1Hive was born in 2019 from an Aragon Nest Grant and launched as a DAO on xDai in 2020. The covenant for 1Hive doesn’t lay out a specific direction for the DAO, just that it funds “common goods that bring the most value to the community.” So far, this has mostly meant building infrastructure, since 1Hive was a pioneering community on xDai. Some examples of the incredible work that as emerged from 1Hive includes HoneySwap, a decentralized exchange on xDai, Agave, a DeFi lending protocol on xDai, and Gardens, a platform for secure digital economies that’s available for other DAO’s to build on. (Some of our very own Panvala League members are actually using Gardens for their own DAOs—shout out to BrightID and Giveth!) Paul appeared particularly excited about the possibilities around Gardens—“It is a way for any community that wants to build public goods value to do it in a really secure, decentralized, community-empowering way.” Click below to hear 1Hive member, Sacha Saint-Leger speak about this exciting new project!
Join, Collaborate, or Contribute!
If you’d like to get involved in the 1Hive community, we encourage you to take a dip into their HoneyPot, and then head over to their Discord, where much of the community’s communication takes place. You can also check out their community calendar for upcoming events and trivia nights! Paul also wanted to relay a couple ways in which your community can collaborate with 1Hive—including aligning incentives and sharing a liquidity pool, as well as considering using Olympus Pro and being one of the four communities necessary to get Olympus Pro built on the xDai network. Lastly, the 1Hive community is looking for connections within Arbitrum and Polygon to help Gardens expand to other networks! You can reach out to Paul on telegram @pglavin2 to explore any of these opportunities to collaborate.
Many thanks to Paul & the 1Hive community for your work in this space, and we are so excited to welcome you into the Panvala community!
